Wm. A. Castleman posted a reward for an escaped black male slave in the year 1840. Considered property, the runaway is worth $50 to the owner if captured in Virginia and $100 if he has gone beyond state lines. The information on such posters reveals information about clothing worn by individuals and the location of the plantations. This escapee was from Clarke County, Virginia, and he had two names, George Jackson and George Dudley. He is described as wearing a coat and pantaloons of "drab linsey," (probably dark-colored linen material).
