The little town of Rowe, on the northern edge of Franklin County, Massachusetts, is pictured here on a summer day around 1906. The photograph was taken on what is now Zoar Road, looking south near a small mill pond in the center of the village. Rowe, like many rural towns in Massachusetts, was relatively early in getting electricity, as the poles on the right of the road attest. But the road was unpaved, and the touring car stopped in the center of the picture could not have driven very fast along it. To its right is the row of houses and stores that mark the center of the village, including, possibly, a gas station.
