This view of Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield, MAssachusetts, captures a turn-of-the-century street scene prior to the introduction of the trolley. Although this postcard was not mailed until 1911, this picture was taken prior to the construction, in early 1902, of the Greenfield and Deerfield Street Railway Company. The railway, which ran electric trolleys, had tracks on the left side of Sugarloaf Street, part of a regional network which would eventually connect Greenfield with Springfield and points south and east. This section of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, was just near the center of this sleepy village, a view that has, in many ways, not changed much to this day.
