Caroline Stebbins (1789-1865) was the daughter of Joseph and Lucy (Frary) Stebbins of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Her silhouette was cut while she was a student at the Deerfield Academy during the years 1804 to 1807. Short of hiring a portrait painter, an expensive enterprise, a likeness of a loved one was impossible to capture in the days before the invention of the camera. A cut paper image, or silhouette, was much less expensive than a painting and was nearly always taken in profile.
