All able-bodied men between the ages of sixteen and sixty were eligible for militia duty, and most towns held an annual "Training Day" in the fall and early spring. Although the American Revolution ended in 1783, economic hardship and armed revolt in Massachusetts in 1786-87 kept local authorities alert for more trouble.
