Tumblers, basically cylindrical with flat bottoms, were the most common glass vessel in early America. They suited a wide variety of beverages, especially the beer, cider, and ale that were consumed by most Americans. Taverns offered tumblers to serve distilled liquors such as rum, gin, and whiskey as well as to hold the mixed drinks of the 1830s and 1840s with picturesque names like mint-sling, hailstone, snowstorm, and timber-doodle.
