This painting by Elizabeth Fuller (1896-1979) illustrates the cultivated landscape of Deerfield with the Pocumtuck Range in the background. Onion growing in the Connecticut River Valley expanded at a great rate in the early 20th century. Newly arrived immigrants from Eastern Europe supplied the increased demand for farm laborers. Some eventually purchased their own farms. Elizabeth Fuller was from Deerfield, Massachusetts. She came from a family of remarkably gifted artists. Her grandfather, George Fuller (1822-1884), enjoyed great critical and commercial success in the 1870s in Boston and New York City.
