By 1914, the year this postcard was made, the Boston & Maine Railroad controlled a web of railroad lines from Boston to the Connecticut Valley into Maine and New Hampshire. In the late 1890s, under Charles Mellen (1851-1927), the the Boston & Maine was networked with the Maine Central and New York, Ontario & Western railroads. The freight yard pictured here was typical for its day. On the left are turntables, used to shunt cars or trains to specific tracks. This freight yard in Deerfield, Massachusetts shipped the produce and goods made in nearby communities. The Boston & Maine Railroad was reorganized as Guilford Rail Systems in 1981.
