Early factories transformed the rural landscape. They also introduced a newcomer to rural New England: the factory worker. Sometimes these men and women were members of communities that predated the factory. More often workers arrived from elsewhere. This was especially true as factories began more and more to depend upon immigrant labor. Kinship networks stretching from Canada to New England and from across the Atlantic to America, filled worker rolls. St. Ann's Church was built to accommodate the French Canadian population in the industrial community of Turners Falls, Massachusetts. St. Ann's offered masses in French until 1965.
