Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were allied to an artistic movement known as Pictorialism and worked in natural settings rather than in a studio. This 'Puritan' group is the Andrews family from Deerfield and all are dressed in costumes believed to be appropriate to the colonial period. In 1913 both parents and all ten children participated in the historical pageant held outdoors in Deerfield. Even baby Fredrick was dressed for the occasion. The ten children of William and Lucy Andrews lived across the street from the Allen sisters and provided subjects from babies to adolescents for them to photograph.
