Arabella Sheldon (1812-1874) lived in the Sheldon house on Lot 3 on the Deerfield main street from 1812 to 1843 when she moved to Shelburne. She completed the rug in 1842. The rug is shirred, which means that the design is created by folding lengthwise long narrow strips of wool that are then sewn onto a linen background with the unfinished edges exposed. The Sheldon house still stands on the Deerfield street, although the elm trees seen on the rug, are long gone.
