This mid-19th century memento, a hair "arrangement" in a frame, is composed of the hair of 75 persons from two different Massachusetts families, one from Leverett and one from Rome. Created by Mrs. Maria Rice Hobart, the hair is twisted into flower, leaf, and bud forms and then framed. Women, in this period, did not cut their hair and when they brushed it, saved the hair left in the brush in special receptacles. Many of them then transformed the hair into fanciful wreaths and pictures to be framed and hung on the wall.
