Supported by a hexagonal (6-sided) base, the font of this whale-oil lamp is decorated with lyres or harps. When in use, the font was filled with fuel, in this case whale oil, and a wick inserted to light. Whale oil burned brightly and cleanly, unlike grease or fat, but was more expensive than other fuels.
