The Franklin County Public Hospital began training nurses as soon as it was founded in 1895. This crucifix was owned by Emily Young Gilman, one of the first nurses graduated by the hospital in 1898. The crucifix points to a striking change in the demographics of Greenfield. Founded by harshly anti-Catholic Puritans, by the late 1800s it had a significant number of Catholics. This happened because of the large influx of immigrants from Ireland (like Emily Gilman) and the Catholic lands of Eastern Europe, especially Poland.
