label levels:
There is currently no available "Beginner" label. The following is the default level label: The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was an organization of Union Civil War veterans. The founders created the organization with the firm belief that the experiences of Civil War veterans was unique and hallowed. As a result, it was intended that the Grand Army would eventually die with the veterans of the war. This record of the South Deerfield G.A.R. shows that of the ten founders, only one was still alive in 1892, and of the total membership of 87 veterans only 24 remained alive. This sketch also describes one of the unsung aspects of the Civil War experience: the veterans' wives formed a "Woman's Relief Corps."
