These petroglyphs are carved into the rock at the Great Falls (Bellows Falls) located on the west side of the Connecticut River. Abenakis have used the Great Falls for gathering and fishing since ancient times. The carvings, heads with rays or horns projecting from the top, were possibly made in an effort to connect with the spirit world. Over the years, the numbers of carvings reported by observers has varied considerably as early carvings disappeared. In the twentieth century, the integrity of the original carvings have suffered from being recarved, enhanced, and or painted yellow.
