This instrument with case is a manual photo enlarger, circa 1930, that was typically found in a drugstore. It was used by trained personnel to transfer film to paper. It was manufactured by the American Photographic Alliance Corporation (APAC), of Greenfield, Massachusetts, a competitor of Eastman Kodak. The company was founded by Paul S. Pirmov, a Russian émigré with an inventive mind and careful craftsmanship, who came to the United States in the early 1920's. He is credited with inventing the first rapid projection printer for the mass production of photographic enlargements.
