Middlefield, Massachusetts, was a thriving community in the late 1800s when a flourishing woolen mill trade caused the population to peak at about 1000 residents. Incorporated in 1783, Middlefield was pieced together from blocks of surrounding lands. Bordered on two sides by branches of the Westfield River, the "hill town" nature of the town is clearly demonstrated by this map.
