Lillian Saxton proudly holds her cornet and wears a finely tailored shirt and black silk dress. A well-bred young woman of her day was expected to know how to play at least one musical instrument. But Lillian's instrument of choice, the cornet, was unusual, since women typically played the piano or violin. Born 1875, Lillian Saxton lived in Deerfield, Massachusetts, with her father, the Civil War veteran and house painter William P. Saxton. She married a soldier, Major A. Frank Hutchins, nineteen years older than herself. Although her husband died in 1932, Lillian lived until 1970, a full 95 years, and is buried in a Deerfield graveyard.
