Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were pioneers in the field of art photography. Using natural lighting, they excelled at composing idealized images of New England such as this one of Thomas Ashley and a canine companion on a snowy winter day around 1904. Tom Ashley was one of many Deerfield, Massachusetts, children who modeled for the Allen sisters. He later died in France in World War I; the whole town mourned the loss of this popular and promising young man.
