In this early 20th century photo by the Allen sisters of Deerfield, Massachusetts, a woman is modeling a collapsible hat known as a "calash". It was a popular form of hat worn in the early 19th century and was designed to keep the sun from a woman's face while accommodating her hairstyle, which often consisted of a bun set near the top of her head and adorned with a large ornamental comb.
