Cars from the 1920s are lined along the Common in the middle of the village of Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Civil War monument, dedicated in 1867, is in the center of the picture. The occasion is the first open house, held to raise money for the Cemetery Association. More than 5000 visitors poured into town to inspect fifteen of the old houses and the 100-year-old brick meeting house. $3700 was raised to care for the graveyard, part of which was intended "to defray the expenses of building a wall on the west side of the new cemetery" [Laurel Hill].
