North Pond lies south of the center of the town of Orange and is now known as Lake Mattawa. The town of Orange became an important industrial center in the late 19th century in its portion of Massachusetts. The lakefront properties surrounding North Pond became the site of a number of retreats for the more prosperous citizens of the town. The fashion for lakefront homes began soon after the Civil War. Those less stratospherically wealthy followed the example of the industrial tycoons of the Gilded Age such as J.P. Morgan, who built lakeside retreats just beyond the smoke of their industries.
