The narrow grooves along the edge of this sinew stone were made smooth by persistent rubbing. Native Americans used this stone to rub strips of sinew to soften them in preparation for use as bow strings or string for lashing or tying objects. These stones are found in archaeological contexts dating to the Woodland period in New England (3000-500 years ago).
