Mortars and pestles were used to crush parched corn into fine meal for traveling food and for use in stews, cakes and breads. This mortar and pestle is made of steatite or "soapstone" which is easier to shape than many other stones. Wooden mortars and pestles were also used but these were less likely to last over time.
