By 1895 the 57-year-old monument to honor the dead of the Bloody Brookmassacre had fallen into disrepair. The attack on Captain Lothrop and his men in 1675 during King Philip's War figured largely in the history of the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Now, seeing that the grounds surrounding the monument and the monument itself need attention, the Village Improvement Association of Deerfield has mounted a campaign to raise money to restore the space. To invoke the proper sentiments from the crowd they have included the poem by Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) entitled, "The Lamentable Ballad of Bloody Brook."
