Auction, or "vendues," were sometimes held at the death of a head of a household to clear the family of debt. On November 11, 1839, Dennis Stebbins (1778-1842) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, bought household goods and agricultural items totaling nearly $270.00 at the auction of his son's estate. Claudius Herrick Stebbins had died five months earlier.
