In the early 19th century the silhouette, a profile likeness cut from paper, became an inexpensive alternative to a portrait done in oils. This example of Abigail Whitney of Shelburne, Massachusetts, is unusual in that it is cut from the front page of a newspaper. Miss Whitney has a determined appearance. Is the hair intended to suggest a braid?
