Jane Marshall Wood (1833-1841) and her two sisters were three of the subjects of portrait artist, Ruth Henshaw Bascom of Phillipston and Ashby, Massachusetts, in the years between 1819 and 1848. During that time, Mrs. Bascomb traveled around Massachusetts creating more than 1100 such likenesses. Her silhouettes were life-size, first drawn or cut out and mounted, and often with color added. This portrait of Jane Wood and those of her sisters have been rendered in pastels against an outdoor scene. The Wood sisters lived in the Factory Hollow section of Greenfield, Massachusetts.
