This beaded medallion necklace is made with blue, black and yellow-colored beads and cowrie shells. It was made by Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail to wear in the Sundance Lodge, a three-day ceremony of fasting and praying. The necklace has the three colors of the Sacred Sundance Ceremony. Blue signifies the sky and air, black is for the earth, and yellow is for the sun. Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail (1903-1981) was one of the United States first Native American registered nurses. She was a member of the class of 1927 at the Franklin County Public Hospital of Nursing in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
