Everyday attire for a boy or man of the early 19th century included a vest. Rarely would someone appear without one, even on a hot day. According to family tradition, the vest pictured here was worn by Seth Sheldon (1787-1860) for his wedding in 1810. It is made of silk. Everyday vests were commonly made of cotton, linen or wool.
