In mid-19th century America, as the country expanded, it was considered very important that children learn about each section of the country even if few of them would ever travel there. Slavery and cotton growing were of special interest to the schoolbook authors of the day, many of whom were opposed to slavery. This author seems less outspoken on the issue. The publisher may have sold books in the South.
