Appliqué quilts involve sewing small pieces of fabrics, cut to shape, onto a larger piece to create a specific design. This coverlet is named "peony," and is composed of red and green pieces to form flower shapes on a white ground. The fabric is cotton, which became more readily available in the early 19th century. Made between 1830 and 1850, it is attributed to Miss Fanny Hoyt Wilson or to her mother, Betsy Hoyt Wilson of Deerfield, Massachusetts and is intended to cover a bed.
