George Fuller (1822-1884), an artist from Deerfield, Massachusetts, traveled extensively through Alabama and Mississippi in the 1850s. His drawings and paintings of slave life offer a rare glimpse of slave life and culture in the deep South before the Civil War (1861-1865). Slave owners frequently hired out slaves to work in other towns or on other plantations. This was especially common in the winter, after the harvest. Fuller sketched this group titled, "Negroes Waiting at the Depot" in late December, 1857.
