This is a photograph taken at the Walter Reed Hospital after the end of World War I. Julia Snow, a librarian from Greenfield, was one of tens of thousands of women who chose to serve during World War I. Women throughout the country became involved in the war effort in unprecedented numbers, serving as factory workers, members of the Army or Marines, or in the American Red Cross. The hospital held men who had been wounded in France and were still convalescing. This picture was taken in February, 1919, three months after the end of the war in November, 1918. Some of the men are still wearing bandages, a testament to how badly wounded they were. At the end of the war, Julia returned to Greenfield. A friend at the hospital took this photograph of some of her friends there some time after.
