This is a notice of the winter term for the Buckland, Massachusetts, Female School. The instructor for the winter of 1828-9 was Mary Lyon (1797-1849) who was born in Buckland. She attended Sanderson Academy in Ashfield, and upon graduation, taught at the school. She then operated the Female School which was intended to prepare young ladies to teach in district schools. In 1837, Mary Lyon founded Mount Holyoke College. It was the country's first institution of higher education for women. The Greenfield Gazette and Franklin Herald was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 26, 1827 to June 27, 1837. It changed its name to the Gazette & Mercury.
