As seen here, the Waskiewicz family of the J & J Farm combines twentieth-century mechanization with nineteenth-century labor: the boys are guiding tractor-pulled cultivators to till between the rows of cabbages. The family has farmed locally for five generations. Joseph Waskiewicz (driving the tractor) and his sons, Joseph and Michael, run the J & J Farm. Their children represent the fifth generation. The J & J Farm exemplifies the diversity of Eastern European agriculture: the Waskiewicz family runs a dairy operation, raises large crops of onions and potatoes, and seasonally, opens a roadside vegetable stand.
