This image by Francis and Mary Allen of a Puritan minister leading his flock gives us an idea of the magnitude of the Old Deerfield pageants. Casts numbered into the hundreds at each performance wearing donated, home-made or rented costumes. In the distant background the tops of automobiles are visible, at a time when they were just becoming widely owned. Automobile spaces could be reserved in advance for $5.00 for five occupants; each additional occupant cost 50 cents per person. Other audiences traveled to Deerfield, Massachusetts, to witness the recreation of history via electric trolleys, railroad, and horse and carriage.
