Frank Harness' store in Northfield, Massachusetts, sold watches, clocks, jewelry, and silverware. It also advertised "fine repairing a specialty." Showcases displayed the store's valuable stock while keeping it safely behind glass. Retail establishments like Harness' competed for business by making shopping and conducting business there as pleasant as possible. Note the freshly-painted, well-lit interior. The insulated pitcher on the counter contained cold drinking water, and an electric fan drew customers into the store on hot summer days.
