Increasing amounts of leisure time for middle and upper class women allowed them to indulge in their growing desire for travel and sightseeing. Scenic vistas and outdoor amusements were particularly popular. These women picnicked on top of Mt. Sugarloaf, in Sunderland, Massachusetts, in about 1910. They probably arrived at the base of the mountain by trolley. They then had the choice of taking a carriage or walking up the roadway to the summit. Mount Sugarloaf afforded them excellent views of the Connecticut River and the Connecticut River Valley itself.
