A neck yoke made carrying buckets easier by balancing the load and distributing it onto the shoulders of the bearer. The absence of indoor plumbing meant that every drop of water a family used for drinking, cleaning and cooking had to be carried in from outside. Conversely, the wastewater had to be taken back outside. A yoke was also used for carrying in milk after milking or for collecting sap for maple sugaring.
