George Sheldon was a Deerfield, Massachusetts, historian who wrote extensively about the town's founding and early history. His biography of Deerfield, Massachusetts' first settled minister focused on the Reverend John Williams's (1664-1729) genealogy and early life experiences. Sheldon's book placed Williams in the context of New England's Puritan founders and the colony's conflicts with the French and Native Americans. Although his title referred to Williams as "The Redeemed Captive," Sheldon's narrative ended before the French and Indian raid on the town in 1704 when Williams was taken captive along with over one hundred of his parishioners.
