In the 18th century, the most active and best prepared militia was in Massachusetts. The recruitment for members of the militia continued even after the Revolutionary War had ended. Mr. Hoyt (1771-1833) was instructed in 1794 to "observe and follow sutch [sic] Orders and Instructions, as you shall from Time to Time receive from your superior Officers."
