Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, took this picture of a man plowing a field with his plow hitched to two horses. The word "sward" in the title of this photograph refers to the grassy turf being turned up by the plow. The plow is guided by one man and is hitched to two horses. It is a laborious task (note the position of the man bent over in his "back-breaking" work) and illustrates the kind of hand labor that was necessary before the invention of the tractor. The photograph is one that was listed in the Allen sisters' catalogs of 1914 and 1920.
