Why were board games so popular? Board games were just that in the early 19th century; games painted or scratched onto a piece of board, usually with a different game on each side of the board. They were simple to make at home with a slab of wood, ink or paint, and checkers of dried corn or beans. The equipment was transportable and games could be concocted with varying degrees of complexity.

This board game is very typical of the period with checkers appearing on one side and "Nine Man's Morris" appearing on the other. Nine Man's Morris is a more complicated version of the game "Tic Tac Toe".
