By 1838, slavery was becoming an increasingly divisive issue. The anti-slavery movement was gaining momentum and greater support but radical abolitionists like William Garrison formed a vocal minority. The cover of this anti-slavery almanac shows Garrison chopping down the tree of slavery, while men representing religious, military, economic, and political interests opposing abolition prop up the tree.
