Branded three times under the seat by Ebenezer Tracy of Lisbon, Connecticut, a chair maker working from 1774 to 1803, the chair was originally painted green. Because of the variety of woods used in their construction - this chair is made of hickory, maple, oak, and chestnut - nearly all Windsor chairs were intended to be painted. The woods were chosen to suit the strength or flexibility needs of various parts of the chair. Equipped with a writing surface and storage drawers that lock, the chair served as a desk.
