This beaded bag is made of black velvet with a multi-colored floral beaded decoration, blue beaded fringe, and red cloth trim. An Iroquois artisan made this bag in the 1880s as part of the tourist economy. The shape and style reflect the tastes of EuroAmerican Victorian women for bags with flares, flaps, and reverse contours. Iroquois beaded bags had been made in more square and rectangular shapes in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This new style was also smaller and more decorative. While made primarily for sale, Iroquois people wore these as part of traditional dress as well.
