Frances [1854-1941]and Mary Allen (1858-1941) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were two of the most gifted early glass-plate camerawomen. Their photographs often do not report life but rather reflect life as the Allens wanted it to be, mythic and peaceful. The sisters published four catalogs of their photographs and their photographs were often used to illustrate books written by others. "Little Puritan" appeared first in a catalog published in 1911. The photograph is colonial revival at its most romantic, a way of creating history as a sort of theatrical performance.
