Every Deerfield, Massachusetts, Pageant held (1910, 1913, 1916) portrayed the crucial and traumatic "Battle of Bloody Brook" (18 September, 1675). This photograph shows the beginnings of that episode, Capt. Lathrop's departure from Deerfield. With wagons loaded with the town's wheat and guarded by a company of soldiers, the teamsters and a number of Deerfield's men marched "beside the river bank," or Muddy Brook, to the site where the ambush by Nipmucks, Pocumtucks and Norwottocks was re-enacted for the pageant's audience. In the aftermath of this loss and with the generally unstable nature of the frontier, Deerfield was abandoned for almost a generation. This photograph was taken by the Allen Sisters as a part of their chronicle of the town's pageants.
